RIM is launching a 4G LTE version of its 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
Despite all the uncertainty regarding Research In Motion and its immediate future, the BlackBerry company seems intent on proving that it’s business as usual. While anxious customers are waiting for the release of BlackBerry 10 devices in 1Q13, RIM in the meantime is releasing a 4G LTE version of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The updated gadget is launching in Canada first on August 9 on Bell, Rogers and TELUS networks.
According to RIM, the new tablet sports the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2 software, a 7-inch screen, a 1.5 GHz dual-core SoC, 1 GB of RAM, 6-axis motion sensing, 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity, and a microHDMI output port. Other features include a microUSB port, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, 32 GB of internal storage, a 3MP front-facing camera and a 5MP rear-facing camera.
“The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet gives customers access to high speed mobile networks around the world (LTE and HSPA+) and offers an exceptional, high-fidelity, fast web experience that supports more HTML5 functionality than any other native tablet browser on the market,” RIM said on Thursday.
Out of the box, the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet comes preloaded with tools and entertainment apps like the recently launched BlackBerry Video Store which offers a catalog of thousands of movies and TV shows. A powerful unified inbox allows users to easily manage multiple personal and work email accounts, as well as messages from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, all in one place.
The tablet is also enterprise ready, making it easily managed with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. The tablet also comes preloaded with BlackBerry Balance technology, which allows a user to use a BlackBerry PlayBook for both work and personal purposes by keeping business information highly secure and separate from personal information.
“We’re excited to bring customers the first BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with support for 4G LTE networks,” said David J. Smith, Executive Vice President, Mobile Computing at Research In Motion. “The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook offers a broad range of premium features, including a stunning 7 inch display, front and rear facing HD video cameras, HDMI out and stereo speakers, and it also offers premium performance on high speed cellular networks, helping customers to be more productive than ever and to make the most of their time on the go.”
Additional variants of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet supporting various high speed cellular networks are expected to be available in the coming months from carriers in the US, Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. A new 4G BlackBerry PlayBook will go on sale next week, a year after Research In Motion introduced its first tablet. The updated 7-inch PlayBook will include 4G connectivity and 32GB of storage, but RIM has yet to name a price or worldwide availability dates.
The first in line to get their hands on the new PlayBook will be Canadians from 9 August, via carriers Bell, Rogers, and Telus. “In the coming months” RIM also expects cellular data-enabled versions of the PlayBook to reach the US, Europe, and other countries. But even with the Canadian availability date coming up so quickly, RIM still hasn’t said how much the new PlayBook would cost.
If there’s no 4G LTE connectivity available in your area or carrier, RIM says the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet can automatically adjust to connect on a HSPA+ network.
Otherwise, there’s very little changed hardware-wise between the original PlayBook and the 4G model. The tablet still has a 7-inch 1024-pixel by 600-pixel resolution display, dual HD video cameras, HDMI capability, and stereo speakers. The processor is bumped up to 1.5GHz from 1GHz in the Wi-Fi-only model, there’s still 1GB of RAM on board, and you only get one storage option: 32GB.
One Last Chance?
The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet could be the make or break device for RIM. Due to key software omissions at launch, such as the lack of a native email client, the PlayBook suffered from lackluster sales. In fact, RIM had to take a $485 million (£312m) hit last year because it was sitting on a huge inventory of unsold tablets.
The arrival of much cheaper 7-inch tablets from the likes of Amazon did not help either, as they undercut the PlayBook by up to $300 (Amazon’s Kindle Fire is $199 while the PlayBook launched at $500, and then began to be heavily discounted).
There’s still hope for Research In Motion though. After several delays, the anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 will ship with the new tablet. All the features you would expect are now there, including email, calendar, contacts, and video chat. But given the lack of any substantial improvements to the tablet (for example the $200 Google Nexus 7 has a higher-resolution display), adding 4G connectivity to the PlayBook might still be too little, too late for RIM.

Companies include: QUALCOMM Inc. (QCOM), Intel Corporation (INTC), Apple Inc. (AAPL), Nokia Corp. (NOK), Broadcom Corp. (BRCM), Altera Corp. (ALTR), Xilinx Inc. (XLNX), Skyworks Solutions Inc. (SWKS), TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. (TQNT), RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufactu (TSM), United Microelectronics Corpor (UMC), NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL), Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM)
The following interview excerpt is from an interview with Forbes Number 1 rated analyst Craig Berger of FBR Capital Markets:
TWST: We talked about Qualcomm (QCOM). Who else do you like right now, and why do you like them?
Mr. Berger: Broadcom (BRCM) is a company that I really like. They have wireless exposure. They’re selling connectivity chips into the iPhone and iPad. They’re selling basebands into new Samsung smartphones as well. Now, they’re doing less of the cellular baseband processor, and they’re doing more of the Wi-Fi Bluetooth wireless connectivity. They also sell cellular basebands, but they’re not as big as Qualcomm. They are more in the Bluetooth Wi-Fi connectivity bucket, but I do like Broadcom.
They have exposure to comm networking, wireless base stations and infrastructure, which is a relative bright spot. They have all the wireless exposure I mentioned, selling into Apple and Samsung. So they have a good mix of business for both wireless and wireline infrastructure applications.
TWST: Anybody worth mentioning right now?
Mr. Berger: In wireless, there’s a host of companies that I don’t cover, that I don’t have a formal opinion on, but that are referred to in the space. A couple of the guys that sell into the wireless base station and infrastructure markets are Altera (ALTR) and Xilinx (XLNX). They seem well positioned from a products perspective.
A couple other firms that sell into the cellular space – they don’t do the main baseband processor, but rather smaller supporting chips called power amplifiers – and are tied to the Apple (AAPL) supply chain are Skyworks (SWKS), Avago (AVGO) and Triquint (TQNT). Another firm in that same bucket that does not sell into Apple is RF Micro Devices (RFMD). Like I said, I don’t cover those, I don’t have an official rating, but I know people that like the Apple supply chain, the iPhone supply chain, use Skyworks and Avago as key plays there, along with Qualcomm and Broadcom.
TWST: What about internal production of the actual semiconductors? Are they produced mostly overseas?
Mr. Berger: Most of the world’s semiconductors are made overseas, because that’s where the most cost-efficient structure is located. There is still some manufacturing here in the United States, but it is modest. If you look at Qualcomm and Broadcom, those guys are fabless semiconductor companies, so they don’t have their own fabrication facilities, and they manufacture entirely 100% in Asia, mostly with Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), but also with UMC (UMC) and Samsung.
If you look at some of the smaller, nichier guys like Skyworks or RFMD, they still have some older fabs in the United States, but that is a very small piece of total consumption. The fact of the matter is with all of the taxes and health care costs, inflation costs, regulatory costs and whatnot, its just not feasible to manufacture in the U.S. and have an attractive cost structure.
TWST: Related to that, are there any supply concerns?
Mr. Berger: The very latest and greatest process node, 28 nanometer, has been supply constrained. That’s the process that Qualcomm is utilizing to make their 4G LTE chips, also called Snapdragon chips. Snapdragon has been in short supply, but they are working through the issues.
Apple is going to use some Qualcomm 4G LTE chips. I would assume, because they’re Apple, they will not suffer from lack of supply the way that some other companies may. Anybody else further down the pecking order might be impacted, but I think they are working out their supply constraints slowly. Other than that, supply is generally not an issue in the sector right now, though cyclically it can arise as an issue from time to time.
TWST: What about valuations in the space?
