Steampunk! Introducing Britain’s latest fashion craze

The news will come as little surprise to the tens of thousands who are already into the retro-futuristic style. But experts at the computer giant IBM predict thatsteampunk will shift from low-production, high-cost ‘craftmanufacturing to mass-productionwithin the next two years.

IBM analysed social media and other internet sites, and found that the amount of online discussion about steampunk increased 11-fold between 2009 και 2012.

It also noted that, since 2010, άνω 20 major department stores and other retailers had becomesteampunk savvy”.

Fashion labels, accessories suppliers and jewellery-makers are expected to integrate steampunk looks into their designs – from corsets and aviator goggles to lace veils and frock coats.

Evidence of the emerging trend can already be seen on the catwalks. Prada’s winter men’s campaign featured several of Hollywood’s leading males, including Gary Oldman, Jamie Bell and Willem Dafoe – dressed for adventure in heavily tailored, steampunk-inspired suits. The hats and equestrian-themed outfits in John Galliano’s summer 2013 collection for Dior are said to have been similarly influenced.

High-street and internet retailers haven’t been slow to react. Topshop and Asos have already embraced the trend, with the former offering a gothic velvet-and-lace bralet teamed with a floor-length pleated skirt in oxblood, and Asos has a double-breasted coat. Alternatively, Planet offers a veil fascinator.

The distinctive style – the name was first coined to distinguish a genre of fantasy set in an alternative Victorian era – can now be widely seen in everything from blockbuster films such as Van Helsing, starring Hugh Jackman, and the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes films through to some of Lady Gaga’s wacky outfits and the steamship entrance of singer Rihanna at the London Paralympics.

IBM said its Birth of a Trend study looked at how trends spread globally online, and whether what’s trending on social networks is likely to become commercially viable.

Trevor Davis, IBM’s consumer products expert, είπε: “Technology can provide tremendous foresight, to help businesses differentiate what is a fleeting fad versus what is an enduring trend.

Some fashionistas have been sniffy: one dismissed steampunk aswhat happens when goths discover brown”.

But IBM expressed confidence in its work, saying its software was able to distinguish between sarcasm and sincerity to spot developing trends.

Woods misses cut in bizarre fashion after two-shot penalty

Reuters, 18/01 16:24 CET

By Tony Jimenez

ABU DHABI (Reuters) – A belated two-shot penalty imposed on Tiger Woods for a rules infringement earlier in the second round meant the world number two missed the cut in bizarre circumstances at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday.

The 14-times major winner had made a dreadful start, dropping strokes at three of the first four holes before making another bogey at the fifth.

Six holes later tournament referee Andy McFee informed Woods he might have to sign for a triple-bogey seven rather than a bogey five.

Woods had struck a wayward shot into a desert bush at the fifth and, after consulting playing partner Martin Kaymer, the pair agreed he should be allowed a free drop because it had become imbedded.

The regulations, ωστόσο, only allow for a free drop in such circumstances if the ball has finished anywhere but in sand and Woods was therefore handed his penalty at the end of the round.

“It’s tough because I didn’t get off to a good start but I fought and got it back,” the 37-year-old American told reporters after eventually posting a three-over-par 75 for a three-over tally of 147.

“I was right there and I felt if I was even-par overall I had a chance going into the weekend, being only eight back of the leader (Britain’s Justin Rose). Evidently it wasn’t enough.”

Woods had produced a scorching run of five birdies in nine holes from the eighth, including three in a row to the 16th, but his valiant effort proved in vain.

Kaymer said he and Woods, playing alongside world number one Rory McIlroy who also missed the cut, were unaware of the distinction in the rule between grass and sand.

“The referee came up to us on the 11th hole and said the sand area was not like normal grass so he was apparently not allowed a free drop,” said the German after shooting a 69 για 140, four under.

UNFORTUNATE THING

“I didn’t know about it and he obviously didn’t know about it otherwise he wouldn’t have done it. It’s an unfortunate thing.”

McFee said he spoke to Woods at the 11th because he was aware of his position score-wise.

“Once we had established what had gone on…I had a conversation with Tiger,” he explained. “I wanted him to know there was a possibility a penalty had occurred.

“I thought he might want to have a look at the exact spot, take me there and say ‘well, that’s where it was’.

“In the end Tiger wanted to discuss it in the recording area rather than the golf course,” added McFee. “There we had further discussions and he was happy to accept it.

“He said, ‘If you think that area is not entitled to a free drop, that’s good enough for me’. It was just one of those situations where he and Martin got the rule wrong.”

McFee said he was alerted to the incident at the fifth hole by one of his referees.

“Spectators out on the course spoke to a referee,” he explained. “They were curious why the drop was given.

“I don’t think they realised the issue they were starting. The referee went to the area…and then called me. I went to look at it and for sure there is no question the ball was imbedded in sand,” added McFee.

“We’ve had a number of rulings here in Abu Dhabi and in Dubai where players have asked for relief and been denied. It happens all the time.”

Woods said his general play was not up to scratch in the first two rounds at the fiendishly difficult Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

“I didn’t hit it particularly well,” he added. “I putted great but I just didn’t hit it very good – I was struggling with that.

“I have some work to do and next week I’m playing at Torrey Pines (at the Farmers Insurance Open in California) so I’m going to go back and get ready.”

Gio-Goi fashion firm latest victim of recession

The company follows Jessops, HMV and Blockbuster in what has been a tough start to the year for the high street.

Gio-Goi had already closed down its three retail stores – in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Manchester – last year citing tough trading conditions.

Now the wholesale and design side of the company supplying clothing to several high street and online outlets has fallen into administration with the loss of more than 20 jobs.

KPMG has been appointed as administrator and is trying to sell the brand.

Jane Moriarty, from KPMG, είπε: “Following a restructuring programme last year, Gio-Goi was unable to return to growth levels enjoyed up until 2009 and has become another victim of the recessionary environment.

We are now looking to sell the business and assets, and will continue to satisfy customer orders pending a sale of the business.

Gio-Goi first became popular as part of its close association with the Manchester music scene in the late 1980s.

It was relaunched in 2005 with investment from a group of backers including USC co-founders David Douglas and Angus Morrison.

The association with the music world has continued in recent years with artists including Plan B, Calvin Harris, Kasabian and Mike Skinner all seen wearing Gio-Goi clothing.

Pentland Brands, majority owner of JD Sports, took a 20% stake in Gio-Goi in 2008.

Fashion Goes Inside Art

Since the blog began in March 2012, Mouchas has introduced Prada to Frank Stella, Givenchy to El Greco, and Céline to Clifford Still. Sitting in front of his broken laptop in Athens, he has allowed fashion to take him to wild, faraway places: Monet’s Normandy, Van Gogh’s wheat fields; Hockney’s Los Angeles. Mouchas says he owns no art history books. Αντί, he finds a runway look he loves, and then pairs it with a piece of art he finds online (using Tumblr, Google, or Wikipaintings)—and Photoshops the two together.

Facemask: Latest fashion accessory

The record-breaking pollution levels in China and the flu outbreak in the United States are turning the facemask into the latest “must-have” fashion accessory. Apparently, what is bad for the health can make for good business, judging from reports that the shares in a Chinese facemask maker have been spiking by as much as 10 percent in the past few days. Sales of facemasks have increased incrementally amid fears that air particles (known as PM2.5)—so small they could penetrate the lungs deeply—have been registered at over 990 micrograms per cubic meter, way beyond the safe levels set by the World Health Organization. Average concentrations of PM2.5 are at 25 mcg per cubic meter.

Amusing as this may sound to many, it seems that the US and China continue to be at odds even with pollution readings, since Chinese authorities are reportedly giving lower readings compared to the results published by the US Embassy in Beijing which has been monitoring air pollution levels in the last two years or so. But even Chinese citizens are not happy at what they perceive to be unreliable and fallacious official information released by pollution officials, obviously in a bid to downplay the seriousness of the pollution that has covered many parts of China literally under dark clouds. For instance, China would place pollution levels at 400 while US Embassy readings would indicate 800.

No wonder, Chinese authorities are fuming at the Americans, especially because anger from citizens is snowballing. Many are also indignant that blame is being pinned on the cold climate and the lack of winds that could blow away the thick blanket of smoke that is covering cities in the north. The real culprits, raging online comments say, are the millions of carbon spewing cars and the toxic chemicals from coal-powered plants.

But whether Chinese or American, businessmen are cashing in on bad health, with rapid sales of vaccines recorded in the US. People are being advised to wear facemasks—although several experts question the effectiveness of masks in preventing the transmission of the flu virus. Besides, it also depends on the kind—since a large number of those being sold (especially in drugstores in the Philippines) are as thin as tissue paper. While the US Food and Drug Administration denies it, there’s also perception that the speedy regulatory approval of a new flu vaccine named Flublok by a little known company known as Protein Sciences (which almost went bankrupt in 2009 except that it was able to get a project from the US government) has to do with the reported vaccine shortage across the US. According to information passed on by health-conscious Happy Hour friends, the new vax is not grown in chicken eggs, which is why production can be faster and therefore could help prevent the flu epidemic from turning pandemic with global proportions. Meantime, it probably wouldn’t hurt people to add a facemask to their fashion accessories.

RIP at The Fort

A lot of people wishing they could live at a high-end, tony place like the Global City in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig could only dream about it. After all, the condos and luxury residences that now sprinkle the eastern portion of the former Philippine Army headquarters are beyond the range of ordinary individuals or families. That’s probably why a columbary thought it could capitalize on the “aspirational” aspect of living at the fort by offering people an opportunity to experience life at there—via an affordable, lay-away sort of plan.

Judging from the number of poster ads displayed on both sides of C5 asking, “Want to live in the Fort? But can’t afford to live in the Fort? Then rest in peace in the Fort… Invest Now. We will show you how,” the columbary owners—or at least whoever wrote the text—must have thought they have hit on a great idea. Just imagine, people can save up now for the time they can finally experience what it’s like to live at The Fort—only they’d be too dead to notice or know by then. As text savvy people would put it: ROFLMAO!
